WARDENCLYFFE sind eine neue Band, die aus alten Hasen besteht. Da wäre Ola Blomqvist (g) von meiner Lieblingsdoomband GRIFTEGARD, der zusammen mit Sänger Jacob Nordangard (v, g) bereits bei THE DOOMSDAY CULT zusammen gedoomt hat. Ergänzt werden die beiden von Micael Zetterberg (ehemals TERRORAMA) am Bass und Schlagzeug.

Die Musik ist ein spannender Mix aus Doom und Death Metal und (nicht nur) mir kommen immer wieder CELTIC FROST in den Sinn, wenn ich die drei Songs höre. Aber auch epische Doom-Elemente sind enthalten und WARDENCLYFFE schaffen es, nicht nach einem bestimmten Genre zu klingen, sondern den Sound sehr eigenständig zu gestalten. Es ist kein extremer Doom, kein extremer Death Metal, sondern vielmehr eine neue Variante in Zeiten, in denen jeder extrem sein will. Vielleicht ist es am besten mit Bands aus dem Endachzigern zu vergleichen, die noch viel mehr auf Atmosphäre gesetzt haben. Sie bedienen sich der Grundzutaten und nehmen, was sie brauchen, um WARDENCLYFFE eigenständig zu gestalten.

Bei „Orcadian Dream“ wirst du von Bassgeräuschen und einer klagenden Gitarre begrüßt, die dich auf das einstimmt, was da folgen wird. Der Song groovt schwerfällig vor sich hin und zum ersten Mal darf man dem hervorragenden Gesang von Jacob lauschen. Der Stil ist Death Metal, aber nie zu tief gegrunzt, immer verständlich und daher schon weitab der Konventionen.

„Behind the Shadow of the Goat“ ist der nächste, vielleicht eingängigste Song. Hier zünden die Melodien so richtig und man fühlt eine CANDLEMASS-Referenz in der Refrainanlage. Kombiniert mit den fetten Riffs und der starken Rhythmusarbeit darf dieser Song definitiv als kleiner Hit durchgehen.

„Macroshift“ ist der doomigste der Songs und ich würde beinahe wetten, dass Ola für die schweren Riffs verantwortlich ist. Wieder ist auffällig, wie großartig der Gesang ist.

Die Texte stammen von Jacob, der sie im Rahmen einer Doktorarbeit verfasst hat (!) und beschäftigen sich erwartungsgemäß nicht mit blabla, sondern mit dem Herdentrieb, Lügen und der modernen Gesellschaft. Apropos Gesellschaft: Thomas Sabbathi, bekannt von GRIFTEGARD und YEAR OF THE GOAT hat es sich nicht nehmen lassen, einige Gitarrenparts einzuspielen.

Demnächst werden sie das Demo als 7″ veröffentlichen und ich stell mich schon mal an, damit ich eine der 500 Singles ergattern kann.

Irgendwie haben die drei Jungs es geschafft, sich eine eigene Nische zu bauen und werden dafür mit viel Lob belohnt! Und das völlig zu recht, denn ich habe die drei Songs so oft gehört und werde dank der Abwechslung ihrer nicht überdrüssig. Egal wann oder wo, die Scheibe geht immer. (chris)

WARDENCLYFFE is a new band made of some known forces in Doom Metal. First there’s Ola Blomqvist of GRIFTEGARD (my all-time favourite Doomband) who played together with singer Jacob Nordangard n THE DOOMSDAY CULT. Micael Zetterberg of TERRORAMA completes the trio and plays the bass and drums.

Their music is an exciting mixture of Doom and Death Metal and (not only) I think of CELTIC FROST while listening to the songs. But you have also epic Doom Metal influences when it comes to the vocals. WARDENCLYFFE have the ability to sound not like a certain genre but rather sound unique. When I say „Doom Metal “ or „Death Metal“ it’s not the whole thing. Maybe their music and sound is best comparable with acts from the rnd of the eighties where atmosphere was more important than playing only extreme. They take whatever they need to create their own style.

„Orcadian Dreams“ starts with creepy noises and a lamenting guitars to get you in the mood for what’s to come. The song grooves lead-footed and for the first time you can enjoy Jacobs vocal. With the vocals it’s the same as with the music. Influences from different styles, but interpreted in his own style. That’s their way to disregard of all conventions.

„Behind the shadow of the goat“ is maybe the most catchy song. Melodies exploding oldschool-style and you can feel a hint of CANDLEMASS somewhere around. Combined with the harsh riffs and great rhythm works you can speak of the song as a little „hit“.

„Macroshift“ is the most doomy song and I would bet, Ola wrote these crushing riffs. Once again you get cought by these great melodies and power.

The lyrics are written by Jacob for his dissertation (!) and deal not with some chit-chat but with herd instinct, lies and the modern society. While we talk about society: Thomas Sabbathi, known from GRIFTEGARD and YEAR OF THE GOAT played some guitar parts on this release!

The demo will be released as a 7″ soon and I’ll get in line to grab me a copy of that gem.

Somehow the guys created their own niche and receive a lot of praise. And that’s quite rightly because I listened a lot of times to the three songs and due to the variety I never got bored. That’s how music should be. (chris)
