Neulich hieß es: ein Interview mit Max Cavalera ist möglich. Wieder einmal erhält man als hingebungsvoller Fan und Schreiberling die Möglichkeit eine Person zu treffen, die wegweisend für den musikalischen Werdegang war (SEPULTURA, NAILBOMB) bzw. ist (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). Entsprechend groß ist meine Aufregung, als wir schlussendlich zur vereinbarten Zeit am Tourbus klopfen.
Nach einer kurzen Verzögerung werde ich vor dem Gig am 10.10.2012 in Bielefeld endlich reingebeten, aber die Interviewregeln im Hause SOULFLY besagen, dass nur eine Person pro Interview erlaubt ist! Leider muss meine werte Gattin Kathi, jahrelange beinharte SOULFLY-Supporterin, daher draußen bleiben, auch wenn ich ihr natürlich angeboten habe, das Interview zu führen. Bei meinem Weg in die Lounge des Busses lerne ich Gloria Cavalera kennen, die sehr nett ist und darf sie in Bezug auf meine Kutte zitieren:„It′s a badass vest!“. Guter Einstieg.
Mein erster Eindruck von Max ist, dass er in der großen Lounge sehr verloren und vor allem müde wirkt. Nach dem ersten Beschnuppern frage ich ihn, wie die Tour bisher gelaufen ist. „Die Tour läuft super! Wir hatten eine mörderisch gute Show in London. Das war sicher eine der besten Shows, die SOULFLY je gespielt haben.“ Mir fällt auf, dass er mir kaum in die Augen schaut, sondern einen Punkt neben mir fixiert, vielleicht meinen Fragenzettel. Er fährt fort: „Wir hatten auch eine tolle Show in Wolverhampton, zusammen mit NAPALM DEATH. Das ist eine meiner Lieblingsbands und ich habe „Nazi Punks Fuck Off“ mit ihnen auf der Bühne gesungen. Normalerweise laden sie mich dazu ein, aber diesmal haben sie es wohl vergessen, daher bin ich einfach auf der Bühne aufgetaucht.“ Er lacht und das lässt seine Augen schelmisch aufblitzen. Ernster führt er weiter aus: „Der Teil der Tour, der uns durch Länder in Osteuropa wie Serbien, Kroatien und die Tschechische Republik geführt hat, war auch sehr, sehr aufregend. Ich habe gehört, dass für die deutschen Shows schon viele Tickets im Vorverkauf weggegangen sind, daher ist es auch sehr aufregend wieder hier zu sein.“
Das Album „Enslaved“ befasst sich ja ausschließlich mit dem Thema „Sklaverei“, daher ist es doch interessant zu erfahren, ob Mr. Cavalera sich manchmal als Sklave fühlt? „Manchmal.“ sagt er nachdenklich. „“Metal“ ist eine recht freie Welt, aber man ist immer in gewissen Verpflichtungen gefangen, wie z.B. Interviews geben oder der Soundcheck. Das ist manchmal ein bisschen wie Sklaverei.“ Ähm, ja danke auch. Aber bevor ich ihn in Ruhe lasse und wieder gehen will, ergänzt er schnell: „Aber das ist nicht wirklich schlimm, es hat ja mit Musik zu tun. Es könnte also schlimmer sein, hahahaha.“
Ich möchte wissen, wie es kommt, dass jede Platte von SOULFLY aggressiver klingt, als die vorherige. Vielleicht wird er mit fortschreitendem Alter immer angepisster? „Yeah! Ich mag es, wenn Bands die erfolgreich sind, immer aggressiver werden! Das ist selten. Ich habe diese Chance mit meiner eigenen Band, also machen wir es! Ich mag aber alle Gesichter von SOULFLY, das Tribal-Gesicht, den Stil seit „Prophecy“ und „Enslaved“ zeigt einfach eine extremere Seite von SOULFLY. Es ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil von SOULFLY, dass man sich entwickeln muss und den Fans etwas neues bietet, ohne sich zu wiederholen.“
Das ist ein gutes Stichwort: 8 SOULFLY-Alben in 15 Jahren, dazu zwei großartige CAVALERA CONSPIRACY-Alben. Woher nimmt der Mann seine Inspiration? „Das ist wahrlich einzigartig, aber man investiert eine Menge Zeit und Arbeit! Ich bin ein fanatischer Musikfan und höre ständig Musik. Mein Traum war es, nur Musik zu machen und nichts anderes. Also erfülle ich mir gerade meinen eigenen Traum und genieße es einfach! Daraus ergibt sich ja auch eine gewisse Herausforderung! Du musst immer am Ball bleiben. Der Druck ist groß, aber ich stelle mich der Herausforderung, immer das bestmögliche Album zu machen.“
Wer sich mit SOULFLY auskennt, dem wird nicht entgangen sein, dass man 2011 wieder einen Line-up-Wechsel hatte. Könnte man Marc Rizzo und dich das Herz und die Seele von SOULFLY nennen? „Ja, das ist exakt richtig. Wir sind ein gutes Team. Ich habe schon immer nach einem Gitarristen wie ihm gesucht, aber habe ihn nicht wirklich gefunden. Wir hatten einige gute Gitarristen, aber als Marc aufgetaucht ist, war ich wirklich glücklich.“ Er spricht nun mit mehr Energie und den Respekt vor Marc Rizzo spürt man förmlich. „Er ist ein großartiger Musiker und Gitarrist! Er ist sehr talentiert und kann auch verschiedenste Arten von Musik spielen. Es ist schon toll, mit einem solchen Musiker zusammenzuarbeiten. Er hat eine Menge Energie, wenn er auf der Bühne herumspringt und sich bewegt. Marc bringt sich sehr bei SOULFLY ein. Ich wollte immer jemanden in dieser Art haben, so wie es damals auch lange Zeit mit Andreas [Kisser] bei SEPULTURA war.“
Mein erstes face-to-face-Interview war ebenfalls mit SOULFLY, damals mit dem Drummer Joe Nunez. Zusammen mit Bobby Burns am Bass war es eine lange Zeit ein stabiles Lineup. Warum haben die beiden SOULFLY im Sommer 2011 verlassen? „Bobby war einfach nicht mehr gut für die Band, er trank zuviel, hatte eine Menge Probleme, also mussten wir uns einfach trennen. Joe sagte schon vor langer Zeit, dass er diese Art von Musik nicht mehr lange spielen wolle. Da war sein Ausstieg keine große Überraschung. Wenigstens sind beide gegangen, als wir noch nicht an einem neuen Album gearbeitet haben. Das gab mir genügend Zeit, Tony [Campos, Bass] und David [Kinkade, Schlagzeug] zu finden.“
Bei all dieser Fluktuation wundere ich mich, ob man noch Kontakt zu seinen ehemaligen Bandmitgliedern hat. „Ja, Mikey [Doling] lebt in Holland. Ich meine Belgien und spielt bei CHANNEL ZERO. Roy [Mayorga] spielt bei STONE SOUR. Ich treffe ihn, wenn sie in L.A. spielen. Logan [Mader] ist nun Produzent und hat unser „Omen“-Album und „Inflikkted“ von CAVALERA CONSPIRACY produziert. Wir bleiben alle so gut wie möglich in Kontakt.“
Die aktuelle Tour nennt sich „Maximum Cavalera Tour“ und bringt seine Söhne Zyon, Igor (LODY KONG) und den Stiefsohn Ritchie (INCITE) mit auf die Bühne. Ist er eigentlich stolz auf seine Kinder? „Ja! Es ist cool, sie dabei zu haben und zu sehen, dass sie sehr hart für ihre Musik arbeiten. Ihre Bands haben ihren eigenen Stil und sie kopieren mich nicht. Sie machen ihre Sache sehr gut und verkaufen einige CDs und T-Shirts. Es ist als Supportband sehr schwierig, schließlich bist du nicht die Hauptattraktion und die Leute wollen dich gar nicht sehen. Du musst sie überzeugen, dass du gut bist! Aber das klappt schon ich ich freue mich sehr für sie.“
Leitet er sie ein wenig an oder lässt du er sie ihre eigenen Entscheidungen treffen und vielleicht auch mal Fehler machen, denn aus Fehlern wird man bekanntlich klug?
„Sie müssen das schon selber lernen. Ich habe ihnen beigebracht, Riffs und Gitarre zu spielen und manchmal jamme ich mit ihnen, das ist cool, aber den Rest müssen sie schon selber rausfinden. Fehler zu machen gehört zum Lernprozess und die sind manchmal wichtig für die weitere Karriere. Ich halte jedenfalls nicht ihre Hand und sage ihnen, was sie machen sollen.“
Der Gedanke liegt doch nahe, mit einem Projekt, welches nur aus Cavaleras besteht, ein ganzes Album machen. „Das ist eine Idee! Vielleicht arbeiten wir mal daran!“ Er sagt lachend „Iggors [Max′s Bruder] Kinder können auch mitmachen. Das merke ich mir für die Zukunft vor!“
Deutschland hat gerade eine mächtige Position in der Welt inne und Angela Merkel ist eine der mächtigsten Frauen der Welt. In Griechenland gingen vor einigen Tagen die Griechen auf die Straße, um mit Hakenkreuzflaggen etc. gegen unsere Frau Bundeskanzler zu demonstrieren. Max atmet tief ein und sagt: „It′s politics man! Es ist kompliziert.“ Beinahe entschuldigend fügt er an „Ich mag keine Politik. Einige Leute wollen dadurch gut aussehen, aber der Großteil der Politik stinkt zum Himmel. Politiker sind geborene Lügner! Gute Lügner! Ich persönlich traue keinem Politiker und ich kenne auch keinen. Ich will auch keinen kennen.“ OK, damit kann ich die Politikfragen dezent unter den Tisch fallen lassen und wir kommen zum wirklich wichtigen im Leben. Fußball. „Mein Lieblingsverein ist Palmeiras!“, sagt Max.
Auf die Frage, was die Fußball-WM in Brasilien für die Menschen dort bedeutet sagt er mit Enthusiasmus: „Das ist großartig. Brasilien hat die Chance, sich vor aller Welt als toller Gastgeber zu beweisen. Deutschland war ein toller Gastgeber und es war für Land und Leute sicher wichtig, die Weltmeisterschaft im eigenen Land zu haben. Jedes Gastgeberland muss das zu seinem Vorteil nutzen.“ Kurze Pause. „Aber ich glaube, es ist für Brasilien nicht gut, dass sie direkt danach die Olympischen Spiele ausrichten! Entweder das Eine oder das Andere, aber beides ist zuviel für das Land und die Menschen. Ich freu mich drauf. Wir wollen in dieser Zeit irgendetwas vor Ort machen, vielleicht einige CAVALERA CONSPIRACY-Shows.“
Mein Vorschlag, den offiziellen WM-Song zu schreiben und in SHAKIRAs Fußstapfen zu treten, bringen Max zum Lachen. „Daran können wir arbeiten!“
Fußballfan ist nicht gleich Fußballfan, daher ist es schon interessant, ob er sich auch andere Ligen und Spiele anschaut, wenn er auf Tour ist. „Ich versuch′s. Ich gucke auch gerne Spiele, wenn meine Mannschaft nicht spielt, denn ich liebe das Spiel an sich! Im Tourbus hat man nicht immer richtiges Fernsehen und wir gucken meistens DVDs, aber wenn wir im Hotel sind, suche ich immer nach Spielen im TV.“
Sind dir deutsche Mannschaften bekannt? „Ja, Bayern Munich, Dortmund.“ Und Werder Bremen! „Wödr Brem?“ Ja, genau! Vielen Dank, sehr nett von dir, das freut meine Kollegen, die auf den Hamburger SV stehen! Wir mögen uns sehr, aber an zwei Tagen im Jahr nicht, denn Hamburg und Bremen sind…„Enemies?“ Ja, danke Herr Cavalera, du hast das Spiel verstanden.
Max lebt in Phoenix, Arizona, aber ist er manchmal in der alte Heimat? „Im November bin ich für vier Shows mit CAVALERA CONSPIRACY dort! Da spielen wir auf großen Festivals zusammen mit SLAYER oder MASTODON. Das wird heftig. Meine Mutter lebt in Sao Paulo und ich habe Verwandte in Belo Horizonte, wo ich aufgewachsen bin. Ich möchte mir einen Tag reservieren und sie besuchen. Ich denke, ich werde meinen Sohn Igor mitnehmen, es ist wichtig für ihn zu sehen, wo sein Vater aufgewachsen ist. Das wird einen gewissen Einfluss auf seine Sichtweise von vielen Dingen haben.“ Um den Bürgermeister nicht zu verärgern fügt er an: „Ich liebe Phoenix, es ist friedlich und ruhig. Der richtige Ort, wenn man nicht auf Tour ist. Aber ich fliege auch gerne nach Brasilien, vor allem wenn man dort auf so großartigen Festivals spielen kann.“
Auf die Frage, ob es Sinn machen würde ihn zu fragen, wer die nächste Fußball-WM gewinnt, ernte ich einen belustigten, tiefen Blick in die Augen und er lacht laut und herzlich: „Nein! Macht keinen Sinn. Nigeria.“
Die knapp bemessene Interviewzeit ist zu Ende und ich kann noch einigen Fankram erledigen, bevor ein Kollege auf dem rotbraunen Sofa Platz nehmen und Max für weitere 20 Minuten versklaven darf. (chris)

Your first shows of this tour were in England and Holland. How is the tour going so far?
The tour is going great! We just had a killer show in London, it was one of the best SOULFLY show we ever played. And we had a great show in Wolverhampton, where NAPALM DEATH was part of the show as well. It′s one of my favorite bands and so I had to sing „Nazi Punks Fuck Off“ with them. Even though they didn′t invite me, I just jumped on stage. I normally do this song with them, but the forgot to ask me…
All the shows were great. The eastern part of the tour in Serbia, Croatia, Czech Republic…all those countries are really, really exciting. I heard the german shows got really good presales and that makes me very excited to be here.
Slavery is the main theme on your latest record…Have you ever felt yourself like a slave?
From time to time, y′know. „Metal Music“ is a pretty free world but still you′re somehow trapped in a couple of things you can′t escape. Interviews and Soundcheck…these things become a little bit like slavery. But it′s not so bad, ′cause it′s connected to music! It could be worse…[laughs]…
From record to record the SOULFLY-sound gets more aggressive until it reached it’s temporary peak with the Death Metal-filled „Enslaved“-record. What’s the reason…do you get pissed more and more the older you get? Yeah, yeah! I like it when bands get heavier when they become popular…thats very rare. It doesn′t happen a lot. I′ve got the chance to do that with my own band, so let′s do it, y′know. But I like all the faces of SOULFLY. I like the Tribal face, the Prophecy-style and „Enslaved“ is just a new face, we become heavier and more extreme. It′s part of being in SOULFLY that you′re growing and never repeat yourself but always have something new you can offer to the fans.
That leads to my next question: in 15 years you wrote 8 SOULFLY records, made two album with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY…where do you get all this inspiration without repeating yourself?
Yeah, it′s very unique but it takes a lot work and time. I love music to the fanatic point and I listen to music a lot. My dream was to play music and don′t have to do anything else and I′m doing that, so I′m fulfilling my dream. I really just enjoy! And there′s a challenge that comes with that. You have to be on your game all the time to create the records, you know? There′s a lot of pressure to make them as good as possible. I accept the challenge and try to make them as good as they can be.
In 2011 you had a line-up change. Is it correct to call Max and Marc Rizzo the heart and soul of SOULFLY?
Yeah, it′s pretty accurate. We work together as a good team. I was looking for a guitar player like him for a long time since the beginning of SOULFLY, but I couldn′t find him. I went through a couple of different guitar players but when Marc came into the picture, I was really happy. I found this guy who can play all this stuff and is very dedicated and a great musician and an incredible guitar player. He has a lot of energy live, when he jumps on stage and moves, so he brings a lot into SOULFLY. I liked to have somebody like that in SOULFLY. I had that in SEPULTURA with Andreas for a long time and I wanted to have someone like that in SOULFLY, y′know? He is also very talented, he can play all kinds of things and styles, it′s amazing to work with that kind of musician.
My first face-to-face interview I did was with Joe Nunez in Braunschweig in 2006 when you played there. As a fan I hoped to say „Hi“ to you but you had a toothache…do you remember that? No matter…why did Joe Nunez and Bobby Burns left after 8 years with you. What’s the reason both left in summer 2011?
Bobby was not good in the band anymore, drinking a lot, having a lot of problems so we had to get rid of him. Joe said quite a while ago that he didn′t want to play this kind of music for a long time. It does not came as a surprise for me when he quit. At least when they quit, they quit together so I had the chance to find new guys before we started working on the new record. That gave me the chance to find Tony [Campos, bass] and David [Kinkade, drums] and recreate SOULFLY.
Are you still in contact with your ex-members?
Yeah. Mikey [Mike Doling] is in Holland…I mean Belgium doing CHANNEL ZERO. Roy [Mayorga] is with STONE SOUR. I see him in L.A. when they play there. Logan [Mader] is a producer now and we did the CAVALERA CONSPIRACY-album with him and also SOULFLYs „Omen“. So we keep in touch as much as we can.
This tour is called „Maximum Cavalera“ and features your sons Zyon and Igor with LODY KONG and Ritchie with INCITE…are you proud of them going the same way as you?
Yeah, it′s good to have them here and see them working hard for the music. They create their own style and don′t copy my style. And they are doing good, they are selling some of the stuff like T-Shirts and CDs and the crowds like them. It tough to be the opening spot, I′ve done that with SEPULTURA. It′s not easy: you′re not the main attraction and people want not to see you and you have to convince them that you′re good. But they are doing good and I′m happy for them.
Do you guide them in a way or do you let them make the own decisions and mistakes ‚cause it’s the best way to learn?
Yeah, I think it′s better to leave them to learn themselves. I don′t really tell them too much stuff. I taught them a little about music, I taught my son how to play riffs and teach him to play the guitar and I jam with them which is cool. But the rest is up to them to find out. And as you said, even making mistakes is part of learning. And mistakes are kind of important to your career. I don′t hold their hand and tell them to go this way or that way.
Have you ever thought of starting a project that completely consists of relatives?
Well, that′s an idea. We can work on it and it might be cool. All the kids in the family and Iggor…and maybe Iggors kids can do something. It′s something for the future…
Like in brazil (Dilma Rousseff), we have a „First Lady“, Angela Merkel. Some call her the most powerful woman of the world, what’s really strange to me as a german. We kind of tell people what to do but yesterday in greece people ran around with swastika-flags How is germany and Angie recognized from the outside?
It′s politics, man! It′s complicated! I don′t like politics, you know!? There are some people try to look good, but the majority of politics stink. Politicians are natural born liars. They are good liars! I don′t trust politicians myself. I don′t know any. And I don′t want to know any.
You’re a great soccer-fan, right? What’s your favourite team?
Palmeiras!
In 2014 the next World Cup takes place in Brazil. What does that mean to the peple who live there?
It′s amazing! It′s real big and Brazil has the chance to make a good name and show the world to be a good host! Germany was a great host for the World Cup and it was really great for Germany to have the World Cup. So every country who has that chance should take advantage of that. The only thing for Brazil that isn′t so good is that they have the World Cup and then they have the Olympics right after that. That′s too much. I think it would have been better if it was only one or the other. But I think it′s gonna be good. I plan to be involved somehow with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. I hope we can do some shows around the World Cup scenario.
Do you have some secret plans for the official song of the tournament?
For what?
The official song! Last time it was SHAKIRA, next time maybe SOULFLY?
We can work on it…(laughter)
Do you watch some football when you’re on tour?
I try to! I like watching football itself, even if it′s not my team playing. I like to watch the game because I love the game! It′s just hard on tour because you have no real TV in the bus. Mostly we′re watching DVDs and movies. But when we stay in a hotel, I always try to watch a game on TV.
Do you know any german teams?
Bayern Munich, Dortmund…
If you could say Werder Bremen, that would be great!

Right! We really like each other but on two days in the year we′re don′t!
Yeah…(laughs)
You live in Phoenix, Arizona but do you visit Brazil from time to time?
Yeah, we have a tour in November with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY and that′s four shows in Brazil! That will be great! These are big festivals with SLAYER and MASTODON…it will be massive! I′m looking forward to that. My mother lives in Sao Paulo and I have relatives in Belo Horizonte where I grew up. I try to save a day to visit them and I plan to take my son Igor with me and show him where I grew up. I think it′s very important for him to see, where his father grew up. This will make a good impact on his way of thinking. I love Phoenix, it′s a great city and it′s peaceful and calm and perfect when you′re not on tour. But I also like going to Brazil, especially playing big festivals like this.
I guess, I don’t really have to ask you which team will be the winner of the next World Cup, right?
Ja…(laughter) Nigeria…
