LES FLEURS DU MAL ist eine „Black and White Rock Band“ aus Stockholm in Schweden. Sie wurde 2009 gegründet und besteht aus mir, Axel Grim und meinem Bruder August Grim. Auch wenn ich die Texte und die Musik schreibe, LES FLEURS DU MAL würde anders klingen, wenn mein Bruder nicht für Beratung und Produktion zur Verfügung stehen würde. Live werden wir von den talentierten Musikern Jörgen Oscarsson am Bass und Erik Lazaroff an der Gitarre unterstützt. Diesen Monat haben wir unsere erste EP veröffentlicht mit dem phantasievollen Namen „I“. Sie wurde auf unserem eigenen Label Malicious Release veröffentlicht, was sicherstellt, dass keiner in unserer Musik herumpfuscht. Darüber hinaus wird die EP in Deutschland von EchoZone vertrieben.
Wie würdest du deine Musik charakterisieren? Für mich klingt sie stark beeinflusst vom Wave und Gothic der 80er!
Nun, die eigene Musik zu kategorisieren ist ziemlich schwierig, auch wenn deine Annahmen grundsätzlich richtig sind. Allerdings bevorzuge ich den schwedischen Begriff „Black Rock“, der sich aber genauso wie Gothic in den letzten Jahren ziemlich verändert hat und mit der Zeit merkwürdige Variationen hervorgebracht hat. Das „Black Rock“ Genre ist weit gefächert und umfasst mehr als nur die FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM oder die SISTERS OF MERCY. Du kannst da einfach noch ein bisschen Post-Punk, New Wave und dunklere poppige Elemente hinzutun. Ich würde uns als „Black and White Rock“ Band bezeichnen, was auch unsere Betrachtungsweise der Welt entspricht. Es gibt eine Menge von liberalen Moralaposteln da draußen, die ein brennendes Verlangen haben, die politischen Karten zu vermischen, um den Mensch den Glauben zu lassen, das sei die einzig Richtige. Sie sagen immer, es gibt solche Sachen nicht wie zum Beispiel Klassenunterschiede, die nennen das schattenlose Denkweise. Ich schäme mich nicht dafür in „schwarz und weiß“ zu denken, weil ich Kontraste gut finde.
Deine Musik distanziert sich durchaus von der modernen elektronischen Musik und vom Gothic von heute, wie denkst du über die heutige Szene?
Ich mag jede Menge elektronische Akts und es gibt auch jede Menge gute „neuere“ Gothic Bands, allerdings auch jede Menge Müll. Was ich Heutzutage vermisse, ist der Wille die Wirklichkeit zu beschreiben. Medieval Romantik und Gothic Vampirismus sind langsam echt öde und haben den einzigen Sinn mit erbärmlichen Teenager Ängsten zu spielen.
Du hast deiner Debüt EP den Namen „I“ gegeben. Wieso solch ein einfacher Name?
Er bezieht sich auf diese EP, die der erste Teil einer Trilogie sein wird. Aber ich verrate dir ein Geheimnis, es gibt noch einen Untertitel. Es gibt einen Hinweis, dass es sich hier um einen Teil einer Trilogie handelt. Er ist versteckt auf der Rückseite der CD.
„My Funeral“ ist ein sehr dunkler und emotionaler Song. Kannst du etwas über die Geschichte des Songs erzählen?
Oh, gut. Nun geht’s in tiefere Regionen. Ich habe den Song geschrieben, nachdem ich gezwungen war, einen Abend mit Hippies zu verbringen. Es geht um Selbstzweifel. Um die Frage der Selbsteinschätzung und wie andere darüber denken, Entscheidungen zu treffen, die andere womöglich verletzten. Wenn einer mal eine klare Aussage macht wer Feind und wer Freund ist, muss man immer Angst haben, andere nicht zu verletzten. Auch wenn es die richtige Sache zu diesem Zeitpunkt war, weiß man nicht wie lange das noch zutreffend ist. Es befasst sich mit dieser Frustration, die Klarheit und Sicherheit kommt erst im Nachhinein, wenn es zu spät ist, Dinge richtigzustellen. Dass ist soweit mein Verstand gereicht hat, eher peinlich, wirklich. Oh, man.
„Astray“ ist auch ein sehr trauriges Stück, bist du selber ein trauriger Mensch?
Als Mensch habe ich die Möglichkeit, alle emotionalen Nuancen des menschlich emotionalen Spektrums zum Ausdruck zu bringen, aufgepasst ihr liberalen Meinungsmacher, von rasendem Wahnsinn bis zum euphorischen Glück. Zumindest hoffe ich das.
Nachdem ich das gesagt habe, möchte ich nun versuchen, deine Frage zu beantworten: ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich traurig bin, aber ich bin definitiv unglücklich. Ich glaube, mit Wut und Trauer den Zustand der Gesellschaft auszudrücken, ist ein voranschreitender Prozess. Das ist tragisch, aber es ist ein Effekt einer ungerechten, diskriminierenden, mörderischen Wirtschaftsordnung. Nun, heutzutage ist es eine Schande, nicht erfolgreich und trotzdem glücklich zu sein, gleichzeitig ist das System aber nicht in der Lage, alle glücklich zu machen. Alles ist so konzipiert um die, die eh schon reich und machtvoll sind, weiter in ihrer Position zu festigen. Man lässt eine Menge Leute in der Schwebe. Wenn du traurig und unzufrieden darüber bist und es nicht mal zeigen darfst, dann wird man komplett entfremdet und noch trauriger.
Mal so nebenbei, der Song „Astray“ ist eigentlich eine Coverversion der schwedischen Post-Punk-Gruppe UNTER DEN LINDEN. Ich habe die originalen Schwedischen Texte von Björn Hansson übersetzt.
Wann können wir ein Full-Time Album von dir erwarten?
So schnell wie möglich. Es gibt Berge von Texten und Songs, die mir Löcher in die Taschen brennen. Auf jeden Fall innerhalb des nächsten Jahres, hoffentlich aber schon in sechs Monaten. Das hängt alles davon ab, wieviel „reguläre“ Arbeit zu erledigen ist. Schon nicht einfach, ein Rock Star zu sein!
Ich finde das CD Artwork sehr gelungen, welche Geschichte verbirgt sich dahinter? Das erste, woran ich gedacht habe, als ich es gesehen habe, war „The cabinet of Dr. Caligari“. Kannst du da übereinstimmen?
Das freut mich, dass es dir gefällt. Was Dr Caligari angeht, es ist ein großartiger Film, aber das war nicht die Inspirationsquelle für das Cover, auf jeden Fall nicht bewusst. Außerdem würde ich es nicht wagen das zu verwenden, nicht nachdem BAUHAUS das vor einigen Jahren schon getan haben. Aber ich freue mich, dass du eine cinematische Qualität darin siehst! Die wesentliche Inspiration stammt tatsächlich vom Film Noir. Ich hab mir das ausgedacht und es wurde von dem unglaublich talentierten und unterbezahltem Photografen Jose Figueroa hervorragend umgesetzt. Er ist ein Juwel! Die einzig erwähnenswerte Geschichte vom Fotoshooting in der Stockholmer Innenstadt ist, das ein Dummkopf angehalten hat und mir gesagt hat, was er über mein Aussehen denkt. Das sollte er nicht tun,…
Sind Filme für dich und deine Musik wichtig? Was inspiriert dich als Künstler?
Filme sind für mich immer von großem Interesse gewesen und ich habe eine Menge Inspiration von Werken von David Lynch oder Ken Loach bekommen, um einige zeitgenössische Künstler zu nennen. Allerdings bin ich aktuell sehr im Film Noir und den Büchern dazu vertieft. Ich liebe die Art, wie die offizielle Weltanschauung der USA untergraben wird und die Art, wie deren Helden so unheroisch dargestellt werden. Da ist der billige Schnaps und die verwegenen Cops, die durch nebelüberflutete Strassen stolpern, auf deren Kopfsteinpflaster sich das Laternenlicht spiegelt. Das musst du lieben. Das ist das eigentliche Feeling in unserer Musik. Die wahre Inspiration ist die unbarmherzige Wirklichkeit eines sorgsamen und fürsorgevollen Menschen in einer lieblosen Welt regiert von Dieben und herzlosen Schweinen. Ich hoffe diese Leute werden bis an den Arsch der Welt geschickt und noch weiter, wenn ich was zu sagen hätte. Was aber leider nicht der Fall ist.
Was können wir von LES FLEURS DU MAL live erwarten? Werden wir euch demnächst auch auf deutschen Bühnen sehen?
Nun, im Moment hoffen wir, Schweden zu verlassen, um Konzerte im restlichen Europa geben zu können. Bisher kann nichts versprochen werden, aber ich würde wirklich gerne nach Deutschland kommen. Also ran an eure Telefone und bucht uns oder sagt bei euren lokalen Veranstaltern bescheid das die es machen sollen.
Was ist der größte Wunsch bezüglich eurer Band?
In der Lage sein, nach Deutschland zu kommen, und die Reise bezahlt zu bekommen. Abgesehen von Ruhm und ewigem Glück.
Kannst du dich an dein erstes Lieblingslied in deiner Jugend erinnern. Was hörst du aktuell am liebsten?
Oh, die Jugend! Um ehrlich zu sein weiß ich nicht. Es war wohl eher so was schreckliches wie DIRE STRAITS‘ „Money For Nothing“ oder so was in der Art. Jetzt war ich wohl zu ehrlich. Und heute? Das sind schwierige Fragen. Weiß gar nicht, ob ich einen absoluten Favoriten habe. Es gibt so viele gute Musik da draußen. Im Moment lasse ich immer das neue GLASVEGAS Album laufen. Please introduce you and your project LES FLEURS DU MAL.
Les Fleurs du Mal is a black and white rock band from Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded in 2009 and it consists of me Axel Grim, and my brother August Grim. Even though I write the lyrics and the songs, lFdM wouldn’t sound the same without the my brothers guidance and production. Live we are joined by talented musicians Jörgen Oscarsson on bass and Erik Lazaroff on guitar. This month we released our first EP imaginatively named „I“. It is released on our own Malicious Release label, which keeps dirty hands out of the recording process. Furthermore it is distributed by german EchoZone.
Characterise your music. For me it feels like a big influence of 80s Wave and Gothic.
Now categorizin your own music is rather difficult but of course your your assumptions are correct. However I prefer the swedish term „Black Rock“ as gothic through the years has both changed and along the way gathered a lot of strange connotations. Also the black rock genre is wider and include more than just Fields of the Nephilim and The Sisters. You can easily throw some post punk, darker new wave and even more popish stuff into it. I like to call us a black and white rock band, that also insinuates a way of looking upon the world. There’s a lot of liberalist preachers out there who have a burning desire wanting to mix up the political cards in order to make people belive they are the only sensible alternative. They keep saying there are no such things as class differences for example calling that a nuanceless way of thinking. I’m not ashamed of being called „black and white“, and apart from that I like contrast.
Your music is distanced from all the modern electronic and gothic music, what do you think about the scene of today?
I like a lot of electronic acts and there are also a lot of good newer „gothic“ bands out there however there is also a lot of rubbish. What I miss today is the will to describe reality. Medieval romantisicm and gothic vampyrism is just empty and I prefer meaning even if it’s discarded as pathetic teenage angst.
Your home country is Sweden maybe the biggest pool of good electronic music. Can you explain me why?
No, sorry.
Your EP got the name „I“. Why such an easy name?
It refers to this EP being the first in a trilogy. But sharing a secret, it also has a subtitle. That gives a clue to what this part of the trilogy is about. It’s hidden on the back of the record.
„My Funeral“ is a very dark and emotional song. Can you tell me the story behind it?
Oh, well. Now things turn deep. I wrote the song after being forced to spend time with hippies one evening. It is about self doubt. Of questioning ones own worth, the value of ones life to others. The choices one make that results in other people being hurt. If one makes a clear statement of who is enemy and who is friend, others and yourself are bound to get hurt. Even though it might seem as the correct thing to do at the time, one doesn’t know until it’s over. It deals with the frustration of that clarity and certainty only comes in retrospect, when it’s to late to change and make things right. This is however as far as my intellect goes, rather embarrassing really. Oh, well.
„Astray“ is a very sad song too, are you a sad person?
As a human I have the ability to express all emotional nuances of the human emotional spectrum, the liberals should here me now, from raging mad to euphorically happy. At least I hope so. Having this said and instead trying to answer your question; I don’t know about being sad but I am definitely unhappy. I believe expressing sadness and anger of the state of society is a progressive action. This is tragic but it is an effect of an unjust, discriminating, murderous economic system. Now, today it is a shameful thing not to be successful and therefore happy and at the same time the system is not made in order to make everyone happy. It is designed to enrichen and consolidate the power of the already rich and powerful. This leaves a lot of people in limbo. When you are sad and discontent and you are not allowed to express that, it makes you alienated and even more sad.
By the way, the song Astray is actually a cover of the swedish post punk group Unter den Linden. I have translated the original swedish lyrics by Björn Hansson.
When can we expect a full time album?
As soon as possible. There are piles of lyrics and songs burning a hole in my pocket. Definitely within a year, hopefully six months. It all depends on the amount of „regular“ work that has to be done. Alas, to be a rock star!
I love your CD artwork, what is the story behind it? The first thing I think about was the famous picture of „The cabinet of Dr. Caligari“. Can you agree?
I am very pleased you like it. Regarding Dr Caligari, that’s a great film, however it isn’t the inspirational source for the cover, if not unconsciously. Besides I wouldn’t dare into using it, not after Bauhaus went there some years ago. However I am glad you see the cinematic quality in it. The main inspiration stems from film noir, really. It is concocted by me and the over talented and dreadfully under paid photographer Jose Figueroa. He’s a gem.
As far as stories are concerned the only thing worth mentioning is that when shooting it downtown Stockholm, some over indulged knucklehead stepped up and told me what he thought I looked like. He shouldn’t have.
Are movies important for you and your music? What inspires you as an artist?
Movies have always been a great interest and I do get a lot of inspiration from the works of David Lynch or Ken Loach, to mention contemporary artists. However I am now deeply buried in film noir and also the books behind them. I love the way they undermine the official hunky dory image of the US. And the way they make the hero so unheroic. It’s cheap liquor and bent cops in fog filled streets stumbling along wettened cobble stoned streets that reflects the street lights. You just got to love that!
But that’s the mere setting and the feel of our music. The true inspiration is the unmerciful reality of being a once caring human being trapped in a loveless world governed by thieves and heartless swine. Hopefully one day people will go egypt on their arses and further if I have a say. Which I don’t, unfortunately.
What we can expect of you on the live front? Can we see you next time in germany?
Well at the moment we’re hoping to leave sweden for gigs in europe. Now nothing can be promised but I’d really love to go to Germany. So get on your phones and and book us or get your local gigbaron to do it.
What is the largest request relating to your project?
To be able to go to Germany and have the trip payed. Apart from that stardom and everlasting happiness.
Can you imagine your first favourite song in your youth and which song do you love today most?
Oh, youth! To be honest I don’t remember. It was probably something rather awful like Dire Straits‘ Money For Nothing or something like it. Now I’m being too honest. And today? These are tough questions. Don’t know if I have one absolute favorite. So much good music out there. At the moment I’m spinning the new Glasvegas album actually. Maybe I’m still too honest.
